February 14 is a day when people share their affection to the loved ones. Besides the rapid selling of Valentine’s greeting cards, this day is also marked with controversies and debatable stories about the origin of the annual celebration. Here is a list of 10 weird facts about Valentine’s Day that perhaps you don’t know yet.

1. There were 3 Saints that have Valentine name, a priest, a bishop and a martyr. The origin of Valentine’s Day celebration is closely related to the life story of the priest and bishop.

2. It is believed that one of a person named St. Valentine above became the first person who sent a love letter to a girl before he received a death penalty from King Claudius II. “From your Valentine” is the signature of the letter.

3. The story has it that a girl namely Ester Howland made the first lace valentine in America. Now the people call her the Mother of the Valentine.

4. Compared to the others, teachers get more valentine cards every year.

5. Mostly, valentine greeting cards are purchased 6 days before the celebration and over 650 million cards are bought by 6-10 year old children annually.

6. Verona gets over 1000 valentine’s greeting cards sent to Juliet, a fictional character created by the world famous Shakespeare.

7. Long time ago, people believed that women would marry a sailor if she saw a flying robin on Valentine’s day. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man but lived a happy life. If it was goldfinch, a millionaire was the man that she would marry. But if the bird was crow, she could never tell who would be her husband.

8. On the 1929’s Valentine’s Day, Al Capone ordered the massacre of Bugs Moran’s mafia organization members in Chicago. However, Al Capone could evade the accusation.

9. On Valentine’s Day, over 9 million pet owners worldwide would purchase valentine gifts for their lovely pets.

10. It is believed that approximately 15 percent of American women send flowers to themselves on Valentine’s Day.
