Alexander, a 30-year-old Indonesian civil servant is threatened to be jailed and to lose his job after declaring himself an Atheist. His recent post on the Minang Atheists Facebook page that said “God does not exist,” was the trigger of the weird case that he faces right now.

According to Police Chief Chairul Aziz, they got a report that there was a fray at the Dharmasraya Development Planning Board (Bappeda), the place where Alexander works on Wednesday. Local media reported that his colleagues don’t like him being an atheist.

Alexander was a Muslim before he concluded that God doesn’t exist in 2008.He said he is the admin of Minang Atheists Facebook page.
Chairul said the mass ganged up upon him and the officials took him into custody because they didn’t want to let “anarchy” at the office. He also said that Alexander was afraid of being hurt by the people. One of Alexander colleagues said he is a smart person, but it is a pity that he doesn’t believe in God.

In Indonesia, people could face up to 5 years in jail for committing blasphemy. One of the prominent Muslim leader in West Sumatra said Alexander should be fired if he does not want to embrace one of the six religions allowed in the country.
